BSI Steel breaks ground for R70m steel processing and distribution depot in Gauteng
Wednesday, 6 May 2008: AltX-listed BSI Steel, a stockist, processor, trader and exporter of steel products broke ground yesterday for a R70 million steel processing and distribution depot in Meyerton, Gauteng. BSI Steel head office is based in Pietermaritzburg.
The Meyerton depot, situated on a 23 hectare site owned by BSI, will boast a 17 000 square meter under-roof facility aimed at consolidating the group's processing and trading activities servicing Gauteng and over-land African exports. The new processing facility will include a second cut-to-length line, recently ordered from Reef Engineering and a slitting line, which was rebuilt last year.
According to BSI CEO and Chairman William Battershill, "With efficiencies being of vital importance in this industry, continuing to operate several businesses spread throughout Gauteng was untenable. Consolidation of our business into the new facility will significantly improve our service levels to our customers throughout Southern Africa and maximize synergies between the various trading operations"
The warehouse and office block are expected to be completed by February 2009, commencing with the installation of the slitting line in November this year.
While the main building contract is still to be awarded, appointments to date include Karee Roads (earthworks) and Rob Steel (structural steel). The professional team comprises QS Noel Stevens (of Davis Langdon), structural engineer Bill Middleton of BM&A, and architect Deidre Serfontein.
BSI annual results will be released towards the end of this month.
